Bunurong Memorial Park History
Bururong Memorial Park is located in the suburb of Dandenong South. The name Dandenong comes from the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, which refers to the watercourse now known as Dandenong Creek.
The word Bunurong refers to the Bunerong people of the Kulin nation, who are the traditional owners of the land from the Werribee River to Wilsons Promontory in the Australian state of Victoria.
The land where Bunurong Memorial Park now sits was used for farming and grazing in the early 1900s. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that the Cheltenham Cemetery Trust purchased the land with a vision to create a modern, peaceful memorial park that would serve the local community’s needs.
The park opening was an instant success and became a popular destination for families looking for a beautiful, tranquil setting to remember their loved ones. The park started accepting burials in 1996, with the first burial happening on 8 February 1996.
The government has funded several upgrades and improvements to the park, including the Pietà Mausoleum courtyard and the crematorium in 1997.
In 1999, the Sturdee Memorial Garden was built to honour Australian ex-servicemen and women, and the Asian-inspired Fushou Yuan area was founded in 2000 to cater to Melbourne’s large Asian community.
Today, the park is run and operated by the government-owned department, The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. The department is responsible for maintaining the gardens and facilities.
